A quick sketch I did a while back during a lunch break of Mei.

A quick sketch I did a while back during a lunch break of Mei.

Here are Sir Walter’s turnaround sketches. If you don’t know what’s the purpose of a turnaround, it’s pretty simple; so you can see what the character looks like from all asides. This not only helps when illustrating the character in various settings and situations but it also helps when making a maquette out of clay. Now that’s the fun (challenging and time consuming) part! It’s also good to draw the character in a pose that shows of his personality, here he is enjoying his sweets and sipping some tea. This is how he will be posed in the final maquette.

Meet Sir Walter Finkelbottom by Karen Dessire on Dribbble (^Click here for full color preview of Walter.)
I’m in Maquette Construction class. We were instructed to come up with a monster and his background information. I’m still in the process of refining his story but here is a bit of a sneak peek of my monster and a few of many facts about him. I hope you enjoy. :)
Meet Sir Walter Finkelbottom, also known as “The Gentlemonster” because he’s the nicest spirit monster you’ll ever meet. He is from an alternate dimension filled with all kinds of creatures not visible to humans (with the exception of children). It can be found in a hidden passage within the human world that is only accessible to spirits and monsters.
Age: 203 yrs. old
Height: 7ft tall
Weight: N/A
Occupation: Tailor
Loves: Pastries. Top hats. Classic 20’s attire. Traveling. His best friend GiGi.
Hates: The creepy mean monsters from Monsterville. (Yes. I named it Monsterville.)
Distinguishing physical features: Large nose; better to sniff out the best desserts. Pot belly; where all the sweets go. Retractable teeth; he only bares them when the bad monsters mess with GiGi… when he swallows them whole.
Personality traits: Gentlemanly. Friendly. Protective (of GiGi). OCD. Top hat obsessed. Sensitive about his weight.
Most overused words/phrases: “Most certainly”. “Indeed”. “Quite”.
In case the expressions are hard to read, the expressions are: shocked, annoyed, shrug, excited, happy, rage, confident, content (also peaceful).

I meant to post this when I finished it last month but I forgot. When vacation starts, absent-mindedness sets in. This was a self portrait project from last quarter. I was horrified we had to use our own photos in this project but then remembered Crissey’s tutorial and it saved my life… well it saved my final heh. Thanks Crissey! You’re awesome :D And since the project required to show how you differ from other designers I thought it would be fitting to include a few of my characters.
Oooh spot the happie robots!

About Cute and Creepy Characters

FINALS ARE OVER!! I’m so excited! Today was my last final of this quarter which leaves me with the next three weeks free of deadlines and probably lots of doodling and gaming. My biggest project this quarter was definitely my book. You know, the one I mentioned the other day with a super duper excited picture of me haha.

So for the past 6 months I’ve been working on an illustrative book called Cute and Creepy Characters which will later include several volumes. This first volume will have four stories: Robot Town, Nitro Girl, Monster Plant and Aquanauts. Most storybooks are created for children but I warn you, these are not. Most of the stories in these books will be dedicated to anyone that enjoys creative stories and illustrations whether they are cute, violent or both! Many of the characters you’ll meet might look adorable but they may just surprise you!

Here’s a glimpse of the main characters so far:

Wattson from Robot Town, Nitro Girl, Seth from Monster Plant and the last story is still in development and will be called Aquanauts. You’ll find out more about these characters when all the stories are completed. :)

Alsoooo, I have an interview for an internship today! And guess what I’ll be taking with me…

Yep! I made sticker sets from my first story Robot Town ^^ They came out really well I think. I can’t wait to set up a shop for some Cute and Creepy goodness. I’ve had so much fun working on this book and I can’t wait to complete the final story and share the it with everyone! Once the book is finished, it will be for sale along with some goodies (like that sticker set) that will be up on the Cute and Creepy Characters’ upcoming shop. Keep an eye out for any updates on my blog.  Fun times await!

EDIT: I got the internship!!! :D
